VBScript

The VB Script course is designed for those who develop projects or small applications in scripting languages, and would like to work with the built-in scripting language of Microsoft operating systems. The course will allow beginners and intermediate programmers to gain knowledge of the language and to use it in their working environment for administering systems, or interacting with other programs, including databases and MS Word.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

New comers should be able to pick up this language, but if you have had experience with another scripting language then you will find this course a useful jump between languages.

COURSE WORK

The course work is based around a 50/50 approach to lecture and hands on giving the attendee the chance to really work with the language and see its potential. The practical work is based around real life scenarios as much as possible and is intended to make the delegate feel more at easy with working with the language and boost their confidence about working it. It will also give you lots of example code to use in existing projects.

None, although if you have done any programming with a structured language, or another scripting language before you will be at an advantage.

What is VB Script

What it is, why it"s needed, where to use it and a simple script, and layout.

Variables and Data Types

Types, definitions, Arrays and single values, interpolation, conversions.

Control Structures Decisions

Logical conditions to make decisions within a script. If, and Select.

Control Structures Loops

Various looping decisions are covered here, definite and indefinite loops, allowing your programs to run until the decision has been met.

Built-in Functions

Built in functions of the VB Script interpreter for working with numbers, strings and arrays, date and time and others.

Subroutines

Writing sub programs within a main program. Defining, and using.

Functions

Like subroutines with extra capabilities.

Error Handling

Working with the Error object, part of the VB Script language. How to trap, analyse and use error information and to create errors.

Objects

Definition of objects, types used by VB Script, using them and creating your own objects.

File System Object

Working with files and directories object. Creating, reading, identifying attributes.

Interfacing with Databases

ODBC, ADODB, connecting and using databases from VB Script.

VB Script in HTML

Taking all that you have learned and using it within client side HTML web pages.

Lots of examples and practical questions to give you a chance to try things out. Feel free to bring along your own ideas to try.
