A note from Tara Shilling, the founder

Each month, we are stepping up our work-load. This is great news for everyone involved with www.therapypages.com. We are advertising and have allocated time in the following few weeks to add credit card facilities. With a brand new keyboard and recording equipment, relaxation tapes are now on their way too - so look out, they will be featured in a competition and ready to purchase in the next few months. Credit card bookings are imminent! Many thanks to everybody involved and interested in therapypages.

Next newsletter is due on 15th August 2000.
Love and light,
Tara.

Retreats

The Lovely Hazel and I have earned a few days break in August - away to a retreat, not sure where yet. Perhaps a review of retreats will become part of the expanding therapypages reviews. For now, here are two we have already experienced. Any retreats wanting us to visit, please let us know!

Gaunts House in Dorset, UK is lovely. I taught there earlier this year. Hazel and I stayed in the comfortable converted stables, walked in the gorgeous grounds and mellowed out in their spectacular rooms in the main house. Although I was there working, we had the whole weekend to mellow out and enjoy vegetarian food and shared our stay with many like-minded people. They run courses during the year with a special week long Summer Gathering in August that is quite something. The Summer Gathering includes workshops, talks, stalls, plenty to do (or not do).

We have also been to Samye Ling in Eskdalemuir, just inside the Scottish borders, UK. A Tibetan Monastery with a temple that is out of this world, opulent, serene. You can visit the Temple. While at your stay you must respect the five rules of this Buddhist Monastery.

These are:

  1. To protect life and refrain from killing.
  2. To respect other's property and refrain from stealing.
  3. To speak the truth and refrain from lying.
  4. To embrace health and refrain from intoxicants.
  5. To respect others and refrain from sexual misconduct.

The accommodation is basic with vegetarian food and makes for an economical and very restful break. You can help out at meal times with washing up as this is a community. Scotland weather so dress for colder weather, midges in the summer. They have run courses over a weekend in the past, ranging from Tai Chi Ch'uan to Alexander Technique to Meditation, ring them to find out if they still have courses.

Interesting Fact 1: Ani Rinchen Khandro the Nun who lived at the monastery at the time she taught us Tai Chi Qiqong during one stay is featured with Billy Connolley on his latest video advertising Tickety Boo Tea ( a chari-tea).

Interesting Fact 2: Tara is a Buddhist Deity!

Book Review - Eat Right 4 Your Type, by Dr Peter J D'Adamo

ISBN 0-399-14255X Hardback

This book takes a novel position on what we eat and how we exercise. Dr Peter J D'Adamo has researched into the affects of what we eat have in accordance to our blood type. Definitely worth a read - personally as a 'A' blood type, I have always known (without knowing) that meat and dairy products do not sit well with me - the book confirms this. Also, I have been doing Tai Chi for a few years now and the book confirms gentle exercise (rather than competitive for 'O' blood types) is the best type for 'A' blood types. 'B' blood types can benefit from a varied diet and moderate excercise, while 'O' blood types benefit from a high protein diet. 'AB' blood types have the benefits and intolerances of both 'A' and 'B' blood types.

Now also available: Cook Right 4 Your Type.

Recipe page

Pesto Tagliatelle - to serve 4 people (or adjust quantities to suit)
Vegetarian - although ham/bacon can be added to all or part of the dish
*Bought Pesto sauce does contain parmesan cheese, so vegans will have to make their own (loads of fresh basil and garlic puree)

Great for your immune system, even if it only means that people will stay far enough away for you to not catch their germs! Seriously, garlic is a great boost and if you all eat it, you won't notice the smell of the garlic.

You will need: Try to have as many organic ingredients as possible.
Salad, either prepared or prepare yourself - enough for each person
Choose this yourself although you could include the following:
Any variety or combination of lettuces, plum or cherry tomatoes, fresh basil (chopped), cucumber,
drizzle of flavoured olive oil dressing (see last month's newsletter)

Fresh pack of Tagliatelle pasta, enough to serve 4 people (this can be home-made if you are keen or have an allergy). Some pastas come with herbs already in, but as this has pesto flavouring, do not bother adding the expense if they are dearer.
Jar of pesto sauce (or home-made if keen)
Medium tub of double cream, crème fresh, natural yoghurt or a carton of soya dream (or mixture of any of these - experiment as they will give the dish a completely different taste)
One clove of garlic, peeled and crushed
Optional - Garlic bread (or ciabatta bread - see last month's recipe or)
Optional - Cooked ham or Bacon.

Cooking instructions: Total time including preparation approx. 15 minutes
Optional - Cook garlic bread according to instructions .
Optional - ensure bacon is cooked, chopped (as with ham) ready to add to pasta after it is cooked.
Boil pasta for approx. 8 minutes in water (or according to instructions), drain and add all pesto sauce, cream or substitute, garlic (and meat) put back on heat and simmer until steaming and the garlic bread is ready. N.B. Meat can be added to part of the dish at this stage to accommodate veggies and non-veggies.

While cooking, prepare or lay out salad.

Serve and eat immediately. Yum Yum.
